VISION

On the site of a 1970s single-screen cinema, the project reimagines a familiar landmark as a new civic destination for Guwahati. The mixed-use complex combines retail, leisure and public space, expressing continuity and change through architecture rooted in local memory.

PROCESS

A central public plaza forms the heart of the development, acting as an outdoor gathering room. The geometry of traditional Assamese Ahom arches informs the façade, interpreted through brick, glass and metal to balance rootedness with contemporary presence.

Terraces, walkways and courtyards introduce permeability between commercial and civic functions, while light and shadow animate the arc motif to link Guwahati’s architectural past with its urban future.

OUTCOMES

The project becomes a cultural and commercial hub that restores the emotional resonance of the former cinema while activating the surrounding neighbourhood. By pairing familiar local forms with modern materials, it achieves a balance between identity and aspiration, offering a place where the city remembers and renews itself.
