VISION
Farmer’s Innovation Centre (FIC) is located in one of India’s poorest and most remote district. One of the big impediments to development in the area is the lack of exchange of ideas between farmers from the remote villages coupled with a general cultural stigma towards innovation.
The centre is a space for the development, display, demonstration and dissemination of grassroots innovations by farmers and inventors of rural Nagaland. The centre caters to the entire BLF community which comprises of up to 700 farmers and their families.
DESIGN
The structure is designed as a contemporary interpretation of the traditional morung typology of the Nagas. It is built in two levels on a plinth measuring 14 Ft by 50 Ft. The lower level is completely enclosed while the semi-open top level (or machang) offers sweeping panoramic views of Nagaland’s pristine landscape. The structure is largely built using chemically treated bamboo which a hybrid RCC-bamboo foundation.
The centre offers a diverse mix of spaces which host exhibitions, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, council meetings and social celebrations. Built using locally available materials and with traditional bamboo construction techniques, the design is a celebration of the context.
